27/10/2010

The communities in Kota Kinabalu and its vicinity, including those in Papar and Penampang had face-to-face engagement and hands-on experience on financial information and management during the recent Minggu Kesedaran Kewangan or better known as M2K from 18 - 24 October 2010.

M2K 2010 was a fulfilling experience for Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the co-organisers,  namely,  Financial  Mediation Bureau, Agensi Kaunseling Dan Pengurusan  Kredit  and  Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia, in enhancing financial  literacy  of  consumers  and  promoting  financial inclusion. As highlighted  in  the  welcoming  remarks  of  Puan Koid Swee Lian, Pengarah Jabatan  Konsumer dan Amalan Pasaran,  the M2K theme "Celik Kewangan, Ceria Kehidupan"  advocates  prudent money management and financial well being of consumers.   The  Sabah Assistant Minister of Finance (II), YB Datuk Donald Peter  Mojuntin,  who  officiated  the  launch  of  M2K 2010 encourages the consumers  in  Sabah  to  acquire  the  knowledge and skills in sound money management  from  young  to  ensure  improved  financial  well being of the families and societies.

The  3rd  annual  consumer  education  and  outreach event brought together various  financial  service providers and more than 42,000 consumers from a cross-section  of  communities  in Sabah. This event began with a series of seminar  on  financial  education  at  schools,  colleges, universities and districts  in  Sabah, as well as uniformed bodies (police and navy) from 18 to  22  October  2010.  In  addition,  seminars  and dialogue sessions with representatives  from the small and medium industries in Sabah were held in collaboration  with  the  Association  of  Banks  in  Malaysia on 22 and 23 October 2010.

The consumers congregated later at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu from  22 to 24 October 2010. The financial exhibition showcased educational information  and materials relating to banking, Islamic finance, insurance, takaful, currency, assistance to SMEs and other pertinent financial issues. The  fun-filled  and  educational  3-day comprehensive financial exhibition attracted  more  than  37,000  visitors, ranging from school and university students,  parents,  general  workers and the SMEs community. 82 exhibition booths  were  set up by the financial service providers, financial learning providers,  Government  agencies  and  other  related associations. The key highlights   during  the  exhibition were the challenging on-line financial quizzes,   wheel   of  fortune,  financial  hunt,  personalized  one-to-one financial   clinics   and   counseling   sessions,  informative  kiosks  on bankinginfo,   insuranceinfo,  duitsaku.com  and  SME  portal,  interactive children's programme, including the colouring competitions, picture puzzle, 'Jom  Buat  Tabung'  competition  and  the  'Si  Kijang  Adventure' game. A selection  of  BNM's artifacts from the numismatics collection presented by Muzium  dan  Galeri Seni, Bank Negara Malaysia attracted much interest from the  visitors.  The  guest  appearance  by Stacy AF and Farah AF was a much awaited  moment by the visitors. The popular comedian Nabil brought lots of laughter and provided tips on money management to the visitors.

M2K  2010  has  enhanced  the  awareness on consumers' financial rights and obligations, as well as narrowed the knowledge gap between the consumers in Sabah  and  their  financial  service providers. The community outreach and engagement has also promoted public trust in the financial institutions.
